A message from our Editor

And so the Peninsula Ramblers hits its 70th big year! What a milestone!

Our new hiking program for the next four months is now finalised and we are hectically busy with arrangements for our 70th birthday celebrations. Our hike leaders have done a splendid job of putting together a comprehensive and interesting set of hikes. Please take note of our weekend away in April where we can enjoy hiking and socialising together.
A warm welcome to our new members of the club, we hope to see you all on the hikes and at the various socials we are planning for the year ahead.
Hike leaders: I urge all members to please consider the option of leading hikes for the club, even if you are a beginner, leaders are always needed and we will welcome any new hike leaders with open arms. At present we are a precious few leading the hikes and the introduction of new hike leaders will also help create variety to our programs. We are hoping to introduce a Hike Leaders Training Camp this year so new leaders can get trained up to lead for our wonderful club.
Looking back over the past year, Ramblers has come a long way in terms of becoming more digitised and admin efficient; our new web page was developed and launched in early January and we are all very happy with the new layout and the selection of options available. We have added a few new features which have already been put to good use and are working well. New members can now apply online and we have also digitised the hiking program so all our leaders are able to enter their hikes online which is then loaded onto the webpage.
A special dedication to our long term members, some of whom were on the Berties Balcony 70th birthday breakfast Hike. We cherish and salute you and thank you for being members of this club for so many years!
A special word of thanks to the following members
  • To our dedicated committee members. A huge thank you for all you do in leading hikes and in helping run the club admin, you are sincerely appreciated in every sense of the word!
  • Karen Watkins and Jeff Ayliffe for keeping the public up to date in the media
  • Renata Puccini for offering her home for our social events
  • A special thank you to the members who were so supportive of Tony Serafin. On the last day of 2016, Tony had a serious fall and broke his hip, which led to him having a full hip replacement in January. Thanks too to those on the hike who took care of Tony and arranged for getting him to safely to hospital
  • Lyne McLennan and Martha Bensch sustained injuries while hiking, but I am glad to report that both are absolutely fine and hiking again! Thank you to our members who handled all these incidents with empathy and efficiency.
Peninsula Ramblers 70th birthday
On Saturday 18th of February we took 43 hikers up the mountain to Berties Balcony for champagne and doughnuts! We identified our longest serving member of the Club as Olwen Gibson who joined in 1964, closely followed by Gabbi Saurma in 1965 and Egbert De Jong and Lyne McLennan. What a fabulous celebration, with visitors, present members and a few golden oldies. It was certainly a special occasion!
We have upcoming a few social arrangements (check our hiking and social programme for details) and new hiking gear planned for this prestigious event. We are hoping to attract as many members as possible to join in the festivities. All details will be published on the web page and on Facebook.
Our sincere condolences to Glynnis Kolzing whose partner Barry passed away in December and to
Geoff Maddocks whose daughter Frith passed away in February, may their dear souls rest in peace.
Lastly, please make every effort to attend our Annual General Meeting to be held on Tuesday, 28th March 2017 at 6:30pm for 7:00pm. The AGM is where we discuss and resolve important matters affecting YOUR club, so please try to be there. If you need assistance with transport, please get hold of a committee member beforehand and we will try to arrange lifts where possible.
